Texas pitcher Wells needs foot surgery

ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Texas Rangers starting pitcher Kip Wells will undergo surgery on his left foot later this week and will miss the rest of the season.

Wells was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier this month after spraining his foot against Seattle. It was hoped that rest and rehabilitation would allow him to get back on the mound again this year. However, the ligament damage was severe enough that surgery was needed.

"It's unfortunate and frustrating, the whole series of events -- having surgery, finally getting back on the mound and now this," said Wells, who had surgery to fix a blood clot in his right shoulder just before the start of the season. "Fortunately, my arm is still sound. I've just got to get it fixed and be prepared for spring training."

The right-hander was making just his second start with the Rangers since being traded from Pittsburgh on July 31 when the injury occurred
