NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- American Andy Roddick posted a 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory Monday over Frenchman Florent Serra in the first round of the U.S. Open tennis championships.
Roddick, with new Coach Jimmy Connors, Roddick won in one hour and 22 minutes. He had his serve broken only once -- late in the third set.
Connors is a five-time U.S. Open champ. Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open winner, is 13-1 since joining Connors.
Third seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia was an early upset victim, losing to Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Ljubicic had posted career-best marks in Grand Slams this year.
American Mardy Fish advanced Monday with a 6-4, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Simon Greul of Germany. Novak Djokovic rallied from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 win over American Donald Young.
Russia's Mikhail Youzhny upset Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty 7-5, 6-1, 6-3.
Also Monday, sixth seed Tommy Robredo of Spain beat Brazil's Flavio Saretta, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, and eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat Germany's Alexander Waske, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.
