ST. LOUIS, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- An RBI single by Gary Bennett with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon gave St. Louis a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Bennett hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third and finished with three hits, while starting pitcher Chris Carpenter had two hits for the Cardinals (68-60), who have won two in a row.

The winner was reliever Randy Flores (1-1) after Carpenter left the game with leg cramps while warming up for the ninth.

Phil Nevin hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and had two of the three hits for the Cubs (54-75), who have dropped six of their last seven games.

In relief, the losing pitcher was Roberto Novoa (2-1).
