NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees Wednesday placed pitcher Mike Mussina on the 15-day disabled list because of a groin injury.
The 37-year-old right-hander suffered the injury in his start against Boston last Sunday night, and was forced to leave the game after four innings. It was the second time this season Mussina left a game because of a groin problem.
The first time was on June 30 against the New York Mets. After that injury, Mussina did not miss his next start.
"I know I didn't blow it out; it wasn't one pitch where things just let go and I had a really painful sensation," Mussina said Sunday. "I've done it a lot worse than this before (and) this is the first time I've had it crop up on me twice in one season."
Mussina is 13-5 in 169 1/3 innings this season.
Right-hander Brian Bruney was recalled from Triple-A Columbus.
