SEATTLE, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Adrian Beltre led off the ninth with a home run, lifting Seattle to a 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees, breaking the Mariners' 11-game losing streak.
Beltre's game-winning hit was his second home run of the game Tuesday and gave the victory to Julio Mateo (9-4), the sixth Seattle pitcher of the night. Ron Villone (3-2) had Beltre in an 0-2 hole before giving up the home run to end up with the loss.
Beltre staked Seattle to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with his first home run but the Yankees got a three-run homer from Bobby Abreu in the third to grab a 3-2 edge. The Mariners tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a Richie Sexson home run.
New York went up 5-3 in the sixth on a two-run home run by Alex Rodriguez but Seattle tied the score with two runs in the seventh. Beltre's hard slide to break up a potential double play allowed the first run to score and an RBI single by Raul Ibanez made the score 5-5.
