Shaughnessy in quarters at Forest Hills

FOREST HILLS, N.Y., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- American Meghann Shaughnessy was a first-round winner Tuesday at the Forest Hills Women's Tennis Classic, a final U.S. Open tune-up.

Shaughnessy beat Poland's Marta Domachowska 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

In other opening-round play at this five-day 16-player event, Israeli Anna Smashnova beat German Julia Schruff 6-2, 4-3 and Italian Maria Elena Camerin beat France's Emilie Loit 6-1, 6-3. Schruff retired with a back injury.
