
NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Russian Nikolay Davydenko and Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus were among the second-round winners Tuesday at the Pilot Pen Tennis tourney.
Second-seeded Davydenko, who enjoyed an opening-round bye along with his other fellow seeds this week, defeated Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-2, 6-1.
The third-seeded Baghdatis beat German Michael Berrer 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6). Baghdatis lost to top-ranked Roger Federer in January's Australian Open final.
In other top-10 action, No. 5 Spaniard David Ferrer beat American Mardy Fish 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5); No. 6 Argentine Jose Acasuso topped Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 7-5, 3-3; No. 7 Spaniard Fernando Verdasco beat Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; and No. 9 Frenchman Gael Monfils defeated countryman Marc Gicquel 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Mahut retired against Acasuso because of a left hip injury.
