Navratilova wins 176th doubles title

MONTREAL, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Martina Navratilova won the 176th doubles title of her career Monday at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Navratilova and Nadia Petrova beat Cara Black and Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-1, 6-2.

Navratilova has now won the doubles portion of this Canadian tournament five times. She partnered with Groenefeld to claim the championship in 2004.

The 49-year-old Navratilova and 24-year-old Petrova played together for the first time this week. They were unseeded.

Navratilova, who will turn 50 in October, will retire from tennis for the second time following the upcoming U.S. Open. which gets under way next week in New York.


Two Cardinals share NL Player award

NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Left fielder Chris Duncan and pitcher Chris Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals were named co-winners of the National League Player of the Week Monday.

Duncan, a 25-year-old rookie, led the NL with a .583 batting average, a 1.125 slugging percentage and a .593 on-base percentage. He also led the league with 14 hits, four home runs and 27 total bases. He had six runs, six RBI and one double in a week which saw the NL Central-leading Cardinals post a 4-2 record.

Duncan is currently averaging a home run every 12.0 at-bats, which is tops among all Major League rookies (minimum: 75 plate appearances).

Carpenter led the NL with 17.0 innings pitched with a 2-0 record and threw a four-hit shutout against division rival Cincinnati on Aug. 15. His next start on Aug. 20 he threw eight innings and allowed only two earned runs to pick up his 12th victory of the season.


Fish among men winners at Pilot Pen tennis

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- American Mardy Fish was among the Monday winners at the $650,000 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament in New Haven, Conn., a final U.S. Open tune-up.

Fish defeated Italian Davide Sanguinetti 6-3, 6-3. His second-round opponent will be fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer.

Another U.S. player, Sam Querrey, beat Spaniard Alberto Martin 6-3, 6-2.

Former U.S. Open runner-up Greg Rusedski and last year's New Haven runner-up Feliciano Lopez advanced, as Rusedski outlasted 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, and Lopez defeated Italian Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-4.


Yankees outfielder AL Player of Week

NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- New York Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon was named the American League Player of the Week Monday.

Damon hit .390 (16-for-41) with four doubles, two triples, four home runs and 12 runs batted in for the week. He also reached base 36 times.

Damon went 3-for-4 with a home run in a game against the Orioles on Aug. 17. In Friday's doubleheader sweep against Boston at Fenway Park, Damon was 6-for-12 with two homers and seven RBI.

Entering the series finale on Monday, Damon was hitting .296 with 20 home runs and 67 RBI. He also has 22 stolen bases for the season.


Schnyder upset at Pilot Pen

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Sixth-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder was a first-round upset victim Monday at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Chinese Tiantian Sun.

Also, Italian Francesca Schiavone beat Russian Elena Likhovtseva 6-3, 6-4; France's Marion Bartoli beat Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-4, 6-1; Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues beat Greek Eleni Daniilidou 6-4, 6-1; and Aussie Samantha Stosur defeated Nathalie Dechy 4-6, 5-2, as the Frenchwoman retired in the second set due to a left thigh injury.
