WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Charlotte Bobcats forward Lonny Baxter was arrested Wednesday by U.S. Secret Service agents after shots reportedly were heard just blocks from the White House.
Secret Service Spokesman Eric Zahren said agents pulled over an SUV containing Baxter and Irvin Martin and found spent shell casings in the car, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. A further search yielded a handgun, which neither man could produce a license for, he said.
Both men were arrested and held on charges of possession of a pistol without a license and possession of ammunition.
Zahren said officers did not yet know why the shots were fired.
Baxter, who had previously played for the Chicago Bulls and the Toronto Raptors, came to the NBA's attention while playing basketball for the University of Maryland from 1998 to 2002.
