Dementieva takes J.P. Chase Open

CARSON, Calif., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva beat No. 16 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia Sunday to win the J.P. Morgan Chase Open in Carson, Calif.

Dementieva -- who knocked out top-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova Saturday -- withstood a furious comeback attempt by Jankovic in the third set, to win the match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Dementieva had been up 5-0 in the third set, but Jankovic fought back to make it 5-4 before Dementieva managed to put her away.

Dementieva collected $95,500 for her second title of the season and her sixth career singles championship.

Jankovic -- who reached the final by beating American Serena Williams Saturday -- earned $48,900 as the runner-up.
