NEW YORK, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The NFL Tuesday named former executive vice president and chief operating officer Roger Goodell as the league's next commissioner.
Goodell, 47, will become the eighth chief executive in the 87-year history of the NFL. He was elected on the fifth ballot among the league's 32 owners. He has worked in every area of league operations over the past 24 years.
Goodell will replace Paul Tagliabue, who is retiring, ending a 16-year reign as the leader of the league. Goodell will assume the duties of commissioner prior to the start of the regular season.
Goodell, Gregg H. Levy, Frederick R. Nance, Robert L. Reynolds and Mayo A. Shattuck III were the finalists as possible successors for Tagliabue's post.
Each of the five went before NFL club owners at a meeting in early August in Chicago, where each candidate made a presentation.
Twenty-two out of 32 votes was needed to elect a new commissioner.
