MLB: N.Y. Mets 8, Philadelphia 1

NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Jose Reyes hit a grand slam home run Sunday night to help the New York Mets trounce Philadelphia, 8-1.

The big home run came in the Mets' seven-run fourth inning.

Jose Valentin, who had two runs and two hits, belted a solo homer; David Wright hit an RBI double; Lastings Milledge hit an RBI single; and the Mets scored one run scored on a throwing error by Philadelphia starter and loser Scott Mathieson.

Winner John Maine (2-3) scattered three hits over six scoreless innings with three walks and four strikeouts for the Mets (66-44), who have split their last four games.

Philadelphia got its only run on a solo homer by Mike Lieberthal in the seventh inning.

In 3 2/3 innings, Mathieson (1-3) surrendered seven runs and six hits.

Before the contest, Wright signed a six-year, $55 million dollar contract extension.

Reyes signed a four-year, $23.25 million extension on Thursday.
