MLB: Philadelphia 5, St. Louis 3

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Chase Utley extended his hitting streak to 33 games Tuesday while helping the Philadelphia Phillies post a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Utley was 2-for-5 with a run scored. His streak is the second-longest in Phillies history, behind only Jimmy Rollins' 38-game streak, spanning last season and the first two contests of this year.

Rookie Scott Mathieson (1-2) went five innings for the Phillies and allowed three runs on three hits to pick up his first career victory. Tom Gordon preserved the win for Mathieson with his 26th save of the season.

Ryan Howard went 2-for-4 with his National League-leading 36th home run and had three RBI for the Phillies, who have won four of their last five games.

Jeff Suppan (8-6) started for the Cardinals and allowed five runs on nine hits in five-plus innings.
