Loren Roberts wins Turnberry playoff

TURNBERRY, Scotland, July 30 (UPI) -- Loren Roberts beat Eduardo Romero in a playoff Sunday afternoon to win the Senior British Open at Turnberry, Scotland.

Both players finished 72 holes at 6-under 274. Roberts ballooned to 5-over 75 in the final round while Romero shot 1-over 71.

Roberts parred the first playoff hole to earn his fifth Champions Tour win.

"I really feel relieved, I've always had a lot of faith in my putter," Roberts said. "I hated it to end that way for Eduardo, but it feels wonderful to be champion. I've worked a lot of years to become a major champion."

Dick Mast, who shot the low round of the day with a 3-under 67, was one of five players to finish in red figures. He was third at 5-under 275.

Craig Stadler was fourth at 2-under 278 and Tim Simpson was fifth at 1-under 279.

Roberts won $293,981 for the victory.


Karlsson wins at Hamburg

HAMBURG, Germany, July 30 (UPI) -- Sweden's Robert Karlsson Sunday coasted to a four-shot victory at the European Tour's Players Championship of Europe in Hamburg, Germany.

In the final round, which ended with a double bogey, Karlsson shot 5-under 67 to finish at 25-under 263.

With the victory, he likely cemented a spot on the European Ryder Cup team.

"I pretty much felt like I was in control of what was happening out there and it felt fantastic," said Karlsson. "As regards the Ryder Cup, I'll probably get it in the way it looks now and that would be fantastic to be in it."

Charl Schwartzel (67) of South Africa and England's Lee Westwood (69) tied for second place at 21-under 267.

Graeme McDowell (65) of England, Italy's Emanuele Canonica (67), Retief Goosen (67) of South Africa and Andres Romero (66) of Argentina tied for fourth at 20-under 268.


Clijsters tops Schnyder at Bank of West

STANFORD, Calif., July 30 (UPI) -- Top seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters beat No. 2 Swiss Patty Schnyder, 6-4, 6-2, Sunday to win her second-straight Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif.

In a match that took less than an hour to play, Clijsters won $95,500 prize. Schnyder got $51,000 for second place.

In addition to her Bank of the West title in 2005, Clijsters also won the tournament in 2001 and 2003, and was the runner-up in 2002.

She has 33 career titles and 402 career singles victories.


Michael Schumacher wins at Hockenheim

HOCKENHEIM, Germany, July 30 (UPI) -- Michael Schumacher was first to the checkered flag in Sunday's Formula One German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.

In front of a roaring throng of home nation fans, the seven-time World Champion won his third straight F1 race, crossing the finish line less than one second ahead of his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa.

"We had a superb weekend," Schumacher said. "Our car functioned really great. If we can keep this up, the championship will be really, really exciting. We hope to have our nose in front at the end."

Kimi Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes) was third; Jenson Button (Honda) was fourth; and Fernando Alonso (Renault) came in fifth. Giancarlo Fisichella (Renault); Jarno Trulli (Toyota); Christian Klien (RBR-Ferrari); Ralf Schumacher (Toyota); and Vitantonio Liuzzi (STR-Cosworth) rounded out the top 10.

In the points chase, defending champion Alonso leads with 100. Schumacher (89) is second; and Massa is third with 50 points.
