Floyd Landis denies taking banned drugs

MADRID, July 28 (UPI) -- Tour de France champion Floyd Landis says he did not take testosterone during the race, despite initial test results.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Landis said he has retained Dr. Luis Hernandez, who has served as an expert for other riders who tested positive for high levels of testosterone.

"In hundreds of cases, no one's ever lost one," he said.

Landis told the magazine he had been crying because he had just talked to his mother, who has gone into hiding to avoid reporters. His mother, a devout Mennonite in Farmersville, Pa., made international headlines immediately after news of Landis's test results came out when she said that if he did take banned substances he should be stripped of the title.

In the interview, Landis said that the test results reflect a naturally high level of testosterone or were caused by medications he is taking for a degenerated hip.

Landis is demanding another test.
