MILWAUKEE, July 27 (UPI) -- Corey Pavin shot a record 9-under 61 Thursday to grab the first-round lead at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.
Pavin, who won the U.S. Open in 1995, shot 8-under 26 on the front nine -- setting a PGA Tour record for the first nine holes of a tournament.
"I've never done anything like that before," said Pavin. "It was pretty exciting."
Less than half the field completed their first rounds before play was suspended, after heavy rain forced a weather delay of nearly four hours. When play resumes on Friday morning, Pavin will have a 3-shot lead over India's Arjun Atwal.
Atwal is alone in second place at 6-under 64. Skip Kendall and Cameron Beckman are tied for third at 5-under 65.
David Frost is 5-under on the course through 17 holes. Defending champion Ben Crane, who played only one hole, is even-par.
