MLB: N.Y. Mets 1, Chi. Cubs 0

NEW YORK, July 26 (UPI) -- Jose Valentin hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday afternoon as the New York Mets edged the Chicago Cubs, 1-0.

Valentin had two hits while Carlos Beltran had a run and two hits for the Mets (60-41), who avoided a three-game sweep and ended a three-game losing streak.

In relief, the winner was Aaron Heilman (1-3).

Mets starter John Maine gave up only three hits over seven scoreless innings.

Aramis Ramirez had two of the four hits for the Cubs (39-61), who have split their last four games.

The losing pitcher was Glendon Rusch (3-8).

Cubs starter Mark Prior held the Mets scoreless and hitless in 5 2/3 innings with five walks and three strikeouts.
