$5 million claim against Jordan thrown out

CHICAGO, July 22 (UPI) -- An Illinois judge has thrown out a suit against basketball great Michael Jordan filed by an ex-lover who claimed he owes her $5 million.

Karla Knafel claims Jordan promised her the money after she remained silent, agreeing not to file a paternity suit, when she learned she was pregnant in 1991, the Chicago Tribune said.

Jordan denied making the promise and alleged Knafel was trying to extort money from him, suing her in 2002. DNA tests proved Jordan was not the father of the child.

Cook County Judge Stuart Palmer ruled Friday that even if Jordan had promised Knafel the money, the transaction was legally unenforceable.

Palmer said in an 18-page opinion that Knafel "fraudulently induced" the promise by claiming Jordan definitely was the father of the child.

Another Cook County judge earlier also dismissed the suit, but it was restored by a state appeals court.
