Blake opens with a win at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, July 20 (UPI) -- Top seed James Blake Wednesday was a second-round winner in straight sets at the $575,000 RCA Championships at Indianapolis.

After a first-round bye, he beat unseeded Danai Udomchoke of Thailand 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

In other matches involving the tournament's top eight seeds, No. 5 Tommy Haas of Germany topped George Bastl of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-3, No. 8 Thai Paradorn Srichaphan beat Australia's Wayne Arthurs 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, Denmark's Kenneth Carlsen beat No. 6 seed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 7 Dmitry Tursunov of Russia beat unseeded Benjamin Becker of Germany, 6-3, 5-7, 2-1.

Becker retired from the match because of heat illness.

Also winning were ninth-seeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium; 10th-seeded Nicolas Mahut of France; 12th-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg; and No. 15 Igor Kunitsyn of Russia.

The defending champion is American Robby Ginepri.
