Krajicek, Smashnova advance in Palermo

PALERMO, Italy, July 17 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Michaella Krajicek of Holland and fifth-seeded Israeli Anna Smashnova had opening-round wins Monday at Italy's Palermo International.

Krajicek, 17, beat Swiss Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, while Smashnova defeated the Ukraine's Yuliana Fedak 6-3, 6-2.

Sixth-seeded Czech Klara Koukalova beat France's Stephanie Foretz 6-4, 6-2. Koukalova was last year's Palermo runner-up to Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Other first day winners included Italians Tathiana Garbin and Roberta Vinci. Garbin beat fellow Italian Alice Canepa 6-2, 6-1, while Vinci beat Estonian Kaia Kanepi 7-5, 6-4.
