DEARBORN, Mich., July 16 (UPI) -- Bobby Wadkins held on Sunday to win his first major title at the Senior Players Championship at Dearborn, Mich.
Wadkins' back nine included a closing double-bogey, a bogey, a par and six birdies -- including five in a row.
Wadkins ended the championship at 14-under 274, one stroke better than Jim Thorpe. Wadkins won for the second time this year and for the third time in his Champions Tour career.
Thorpe could have forced a playoff, but a bogey on the last hole left him at 13-under 275 after a closing 3-under 69.
Third-round leader Loren Roberts faltered in the final round for the second straight Sunday. Roberts set a USGA record with his 62 in the third round of the U.S. Senior Open last week, but had a final 73.
Roberts had rounds of 67-64 to lead by two shots entering Sunday's final round and his lead had been as big as five strokes.
