BIRMINGHAM, Ala., July 14 (UPI) -- Birmingham-Southern men's basketball coach Duane Reboul, who led the Panther to 402 victories over 17 seasons, has resigned.
Birmingham-Southern Athletics Director Joe Dean, on the department's Web site, said Reboul decided to step down after the school Board of Trustee's voted to reclassify the program from NCAA Division I to Division III. Reboul is to remain at Birmingham-Southern in the physical education department.
Dean said longtime Reboul assistant Mitch Cole would immediately take over as head basketball coach.
Reboul had a 402-124 record in 17 years as head coach, including NAIA national championships in 1990 and 1995. The 402 victories is the most for any Birmingham-Southern basketball coach.
He was twice named Big South Conference coach of the year after Birmingham-Southern became an NCAA Division I member, including the 2005-06 season when the Panthers finished second in the conference regular season standings.
