Nationals get Kearns, Lopez from Reds

CINCINNATI, July 13 (UPI) -- The Cincinnati Reds sent outfielder Austin Kearns, shortstop Felipe Lopez and pitcher Ryan Wagner to the Washington Nationals in an eight-player trade.

The Nationals shipped pitchers Gary Majewski, Bill Bray and Daryl Thompson, infielder Brendan Harris and veteran shortstop Royce Clayton to Cincinnati.

Kearns, 26, is batting .274 with 16 home runs and 50 RBI in 87 games this season. Lopez, also 26, is batting .268 with nine homers, 30 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 85 games. Both players were expected to join Washington in time for a three-game series in Pittsburgh Friday.

The 23-year-old Wagner, 8-4 over three seasons with a career 4.69 ERA, will be optioned to Triple-A New Orleans.

Left-handed reliever Majewski, 26, is 3-2 this season with a 3.58 ERA. Bray, a top prospect in his first season, had a 3.91 ERA in 19 relief appearances with the Nationals. Thompson, 20, was 0-1 in four starts for Vermont in the Class A New York-Penn League.

Harris hit .283 with five home runs in 17 games for the Nationals. Clayton was batting .269 in 89 games before he was traded to his ninth Major League team.
