Upsets abound at Newport tennis tourney

NEWPORT, R.I., July 11 (UPI) -- Upsets continued in the first round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championship in Newport, R.I. Tuesday as the tournament's second and third-seeds were ousted.

Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and American Paul Goldstein both lost. Second-seeded Karlovic fell to unseeded George Bastl of Switzerland, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4. 4-2, when he withdrew after suffering knee injury in the third set.

Unseeded Australian Mark Phillippoussis beat third-seeded Goldstein, 6-4, 6-2, in straight sets.

Top-seeded Andy Murray of Scotland, No. 36 in the world rankings, hung on to beat unseeded Ricardo Melio of Brazil, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Other first round winners included seventh-seeded American Mardy Fish and eighth-seed American Justin Gimelstob. Fourth-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg and fifth-seeded American Vincent Spadea were upset in first round action on Monday.
