Gaudio advances at Swiss Open championship

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 11 (UPI) -- Defending Swiss Open champ Gaston Gaudio downed Brazil's Marcos Daniel, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, in the first round of the tournament at Gstaad, Switzerland.

The win was Gaudio's 17th at the Swiss Open against just four losses all-time, and he next faces Christophe Rochus of Belarus, who ousted Spain's Fernando Vicente, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Fourth-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu of France lost to Serbian Dusan Vemic, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), and fifth-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain was ousted by unseeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-2.

Novak, a two-time Swiss Open champion, meets unranked Germany Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round.
