Berdych upset at Swedish Open

BASTAD, Sweden, July 11 (UPI) -- Unseeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain ousted third-seed Czech Tomas Berdych, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), Tuesday in the first round of the Swedish Open at Bastad, Sweden.

In other upsets, Luis Horna of Peru downed sixth-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden, 6-4, 6-2, and Jose Acasuso of Argentina defeated seventh-seeded Argentine Guillermo Coria, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Fourth-seeded Jurkko Nieminen of Finland beat Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, and fifth-seed David Ferrer dispatched Kuwait's Mohammed Al Ghraeeb, 6-4, 6-4.

Tuesday's match between German Alexander Waske and Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden was suspended by rain with Waske leading, 6-4, 4-6, 4-2.

The clay-court tournament is being played without defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain who was beaten in four sets by Roger Federer in Sunday's Wimbledon final.
