Blackhawks get Havlat in three-way deal
CHICAGO, July 10 (UPI) -- The Chicago Blackhawks got forwards Martin Havlat and Bryan Smolinski from the Ottawa Senators Monday in a three-way deal involving the San Jose Sharks.
Chicago sent forward Mark Bell to the Sharks in exchange for defenseman Tom Preissing and forward Josh Hennessy. The Blackhawks then turned around and shipped Preissing and Hennessy, along with defenseman Michal Barinka and a 2008 second-round draft pick, to Ottawa in exchange for Havlat and Smolinski.
Havlat, a restricted free agent, also signed a three-year deal with the Blackhawks. He missed 58 games last season after shoulder surgery. But the forward scored 13 points in 10 playoff games.
Havlat has recorded 105 goals and 130 assists for 235 points in only 298 NHL games. The Czech Republic native was also named to the NHL "All Rookie" Team following the 2000-01 campaign.
Detroit's Rogers and Dodgers' Penny start
PITTSBURGH, July 10 (UPI) -- Detroit Tigers veteran Kenny Rogers and Brad Penny of the Los Angeles Dodgers will be the starting pitchers for Tuesday's All-Star Game.
American League Manager Ozzie Guillen of the Chicago White Sox and National League Manager Phil Garner of the Houston Astros made the announcements at a Monday press conference.
The lineup for the American League will open with Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, followed by New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Boston first baseman David Ortiz and Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
LA Angels Vladimir Guerrero will bat fifth and play left field. He will be followed by Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez, Toronto center fielder Vernon Wells, Boston second baseman Mark Loretta and Rogers.
Muller and Spadea upset in Newport
NEWPORT, R.I., July 10 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg and fifth-seeded American Vincent Spadea were upset Monday in the first round of the Hall of Fame Championships.
Muller lost to Chile's Paul Capdeville, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, and Spadea was defeated by American Robert Kendrick, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Kendrick pushed world No. 2 Rafael Nadal to five sets in a second-round match at Wimbledon.
Sixth seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria beat Romania's Razvan Sabau, 7-5, 7-5; Russian Igor Kunitsyn beat American Bobby Reynolds, 7-5, 6-2; and South African Rik De Voest defeated Poland's Lukasz Kubot, 6-2, 6-2.
Hawks sign top pick Shelden Williams
ATLANTA, July 10 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Hawks announced Monday they have signed their top draft pick, forward Shelden Williams.
Williams was the fifth overall selection of the 2006 draft after a standout career at Duke. He was a First-Team All-America as a senior after averaging 18.7 points and 10.7 rebounds for the Blue Devils.
The 6-foot-9 Williams became just the third player in NCAA history to record at least 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, 350 blocked shots and 150 steals. The other two were Navy's David Robinson and Louisville's Pervis Ellison.
Davydenko, Robredo advance at Swedish Open
BASTAD, Sweden, July 10 (UPI) -- Nikolay Davydenko and Tommy Robredo advanced during Monday's first-round action at the Swedish Open.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain is not playing this week. Nadal, who has won 60 consecutive matches on clay, withdrew claiming fatigue.but pulled out citing fatigue from a busy last month.
Nadal beat Swiss star Roger Federer to win the French Open in early June but lost to him in four sets in the Wimbledon final on Sunday.
Top-seeded Davydenko, a Russian, opened with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Spain's Alberto Martin. Robredo bounced back from a sluggish first set to beat France's Gilles Simon 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
