Germany's Klose takes Golden Shoe

BERLIN, July 9 (UPI) -- Germany's Miroslav Klose, who opened the tournament with a two-goal effort, has won the Golden Shoe as the high goal scorer in the 2006 World Cup.

Klose scored a pair of goals in the World's Cup first game when Germany beat Costa Rica. He scored two more against Ecuador as Germany completed group play with three victories and added a late goal in an elimination game against Argentina.

His five-goal total is the second lowest to win the Golden Shoe. Six players shared the honor in 1962 after scoring four goals and three players each had four to lead the way in 1934.

Heading into the tournament's final game, only France's Thierry Henry, who entered the final with three goals, and France's Patrick Vieira and Italy's Toni Luca, who each had two, had realistic chances of catching Klose. None scored in the final. Henry was among seven players who ended up with three goals.

Klose is the first German to win the Golden Shoe since Gerd Muller, who scored 10 goals in the 1970 tournament.

Brazil's Ronaldo won the award in 2002, piling up eight goals. Klose and Brazil's Rivaldo were second in that tournament, scoring five times.
