NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- Detroit right fielder Magglio Ordonez Friday was named to the American League All-Star team, replacing Boston's injured Manny Ramirez.
Ordonez is batting .307 with 15 homers and 59 RBI, leading the Tigers to first place in the AL Central Division.
The 33-year-old Ramirez has been playing on gimpy knees all season and decided to shut it down for the three-day all-star break beginning Monday.
He was the AL's leading vote-getter with 3,101,161 votes, and is batting .310 with 24 home runs and 65 RBI.
"The way Magglio is playing, he earned the spot," AL and Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen said.
Ordonez used to play for Guillen with the White Sox.
Also Friday, Houston's Roy Oswalt was tabbed to replace New York Mets ace Pedro Martinez on the National League All-Star team. The Mets placed Martinez on the disabled list Thursday because of a left hip ailment.
In 119 innings, Oswalt is 6-5 with an ERA of 3.10.
