"I'm really glad we shut him down when we did," Manager Joe Maddon told the Tampa Tribune.

Walker's operation was performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. It normally requires at least one year recovery time.

Before he went to the DL, the 6-foot-3 inch, 260-pound Walker, who was obtained in a trade with San Francisco in 2005, made 10 saves in 20 appearances.

In his career, he is 13-9 with 34 saves.
