VALKENBURG, Netherlands, July 4 (UPI) -- Matthias Kessler of Germany held off teammate Michael Rogers of Australia Tuesday to capture the third stage of the Tour de France.

Tuesday's 216.5-km race was from Esch-sur-Alzette to Valkenburg, the Netherlands.

Daniele Benati finished third while Belgian star Tom Boonen placed fourth and took the overall lead from Norwegian Thor Hushovd.

The stage was marred by a crash involving Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, Fred Rodriguez of the United States and Erik Dekker of the Netherlands.

This year's Tour doesn't have seven-time champion Lance Armstrong, who retired.

The Tour de France continues with a 207-km journey from Huy to Saint-Quentin and will end July 23 on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.
