BADEN-BADEN, Germany, July 1 (UPI) -- The wives and girlfriends of English soccer stars, familiarly known as WAGs, have a zest for shopping and partying that has annoyed some Europeans.
The Daily Mail, a London newspaper, reprinted a column by Ramon Villapadierna, a Spanish correspondent in Berlin, that described the WAG invasion of Baden-Baden, a German resort where the rich and well-born once took the waters. He described the WAGs as "hooligans with visas" and accused them of bringing a Wild West atmosphere to nightclubs.
"Finally, the lines are divided between those who drink by night and those who shop by day, with Victoria Beckham indecisive between continuing to diet or buying some more big glasses," Villapadierna said.
To add insult to injury, German shopkeepers, the correspondent said, "are praying that the English reach the final."
Some of Villapadierna's rant could be sour grapes since Spain got knocked out of World Cup contention. And the shopkeepers' prayers went unanswered, as Portugal knocked England out of the tournament on Saturday.
