NEW YORK, June 29 (UPI) -- The PGA Tour hopes to add the feeling of post-season drama with its new FedEx Cup playoff-style format that begins in 2007.
Under the plan, a $10 million prize will go to the winner with a $35 million overall bonus purse, with points earned from the season-opening Mercedes Championships in January through the Carolina Classic at Greensboro.
The top 144 players will be eligible for the playoffs, to be played at the Barclays Classic, Deutsche Bank Championship, BMW Championship and the Tour Championship at East Lake.
The four majors -- the Masters, the U.S. and British Opens and the PGA Championship -- are the usual focal points of the PGA Tour. But, Commissioner Tim Finchem says the Tour's top pros have assured him they will support the plan.
