Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
NEW YORK, June 26 (UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols became the first player to surpass the 2 million-vote mark in National League votes for the All-Star Game.
Pujols has 2,206,409 votes and leads the next closest player at his position, New York's Carlos Delgado, by over 1.6 million votes.
Pittsburgh's Jason Bay has 1,706,105 votes to lead all outfielders. He could become the first Pirate in the starting lineup since Andy Van Slyke in 1993.
New York's Carlos Beltran (1,537,849) and Alfonso Soriano (1,484,845) round out the top three at the position.
Three members of the New York Mets continue to lead at their respective positions. David Wright has 1,386,584 votes and leads St. Louis' Scott Rolen (1,041,250) for the start at third base. Paul Lo Duca, with 1,281,767 votes, leads former Met and current San Diego Padres catcher Mike Piazza (880,948), and Jose Reyes holds a slight edge over Pittsburgh's Jack Wilson for the start at short.
