STUTTGART, Germany, June 25 (UPI) -- David Beckham scored a goal Sunday and Paul Robinson had his third shutout of the 2006 World Cup in England's 1-0 elimination-round victory over Ecuador.
The win moves England into the World Cup quarterfinals Saturday against Portugal, which posted a 1-0 victory Sunday over The Netherlands in its first elimination game.
Robinson has allowed two goals in four World Cup games -- both against Sweden when England already had its second-round berth secured. He faced nine shots against Ecuador, including several in the game's final minutes as the Ecuadorians desperately tried to tie the score.
Ecuador goalkeeper Cristian Mora was also gunning for his third shutout -- the only goals he allowed in the tournament came against Germany -- and was two-thirds of the way there when Beckham struck.
England's Frank Lampard was fouled by Edwin Tenorio and England elected to have Beckham take the free kick from just outside the box in the 60th minute. Beckham drilled a shot off the inside of the goal for the score.
The shot allowed Beckham to become first English player to score goals in three World Cups.
