KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany, June 23 (UPI) -- The improbable World Cup run of Australia has reached the tournament's second round with a game against Italy.
Italy, which won Group E with a 2
Australia won't be playing the role of favorite in any World Cup game but has showed that doesn't matter.
"We really feel good as underdogs and we are all enjoying being here," said Australian defender Craig Moore. "We'd love to stay longer. The fans were unbelievable.
"We were stronger than Croatia ... and we can be stronger than the Italians, too, because they struggled against the USA."
For Italy, the goal was to win Group E because powerhouse Brazil was likely -- and did -- win Group F and be paired with Group E's No. 2, and any second-round opponent was preferable to the Brazilians.
Italy's Fabio Grosso said: "The most important thing is that we look more and more like a team and not just football players playing together. Now we have to do better and better. Personally I am happy to avoid playing Brazil in the next match."
