
STUTTGART, Germany, June 22 (UPI) -- Harry Kewell scored in the 79th minute Thursday, delivering Australia a 2-2 World Cup tie with Croatia and a second-round berth in the tournament.
Australia, 1-1-1, is playing in its second World Cup -- the first was 1974 when the tournament was last in Germany -- but ended up second in Group F and will meet Group E titlist Italy, 2
Croatia needed to win the game to have hopes of advancing and even led twice. The first came in the second minute of the game when Darijo Srna converted a free kick from the edge of the penalty box.
Australia tied the score late in the first half on a Craig Moore penalty kick after Croatia was called for a hand ball in the box.
Croatia's hopes went up in the 56th minute when Australian goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac couldn't handle a soft shot from Niko Kovac.
But Kewell made the score 2-2 in the 79th minute with a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa.
