Steve Alford gets extension at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa, June 21 (UPI) -- The University of Iowa Wednesday gave men's basketball coach Steve Alford a one-year contract extension.

Alford, a former standout player at Indiana who just completed his seventh season in Iowa City, had been rumored to be a booster favorite to fill the vacancy in Bloomington following the resignation of Mike Davis.

His record at Iowa is 135-92, including six straight winning seasons and post-season appearances.

"I appreciate the administration's confidence in our program," he said on the school's Web site. "The men's basketball staff feels very good about the direction the program is headed. The future of Iowa basketball is excellent and I look forward to what lies ahead."

In the 2005-06 season, the Hawkeyes were 25-9 and won the Big Ten Tournament, before suffering a shocking 64-63 last-second loss to unheralded Northwestern State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
