Mexico has dual goals against Portugal

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany, June 20 (UPI) -- There are two targets for Mexico when it plays its final World Cup group game against Portugal -- qualifying to move on and winning Group D.

Portugal owns a two-point advantage over Mexico heading into their match in Gelsenkirchen Wednesday. However, while Portugal has locked up its berth in the Round of 16, Mexico could still miss out. If Mexico loses to Portugal and Angola beats Iran, the second Group D berth will come down to goal differential.

Mexico, which played well in its opener, may have been looking past Angola and paid the price with a game that ended in a scoreless draw -- and one point in the standings instead of three.

"We played better than against Iran, but obviously we're not completely happy because we dominated the game and didn't score," said Mexico midfielder Pavel Pardo.

"The game against Portugal is going to be more difficult but we're ready and we're capable of winning the game."

Things have been going well for Portugal, which has beaten Angola 1-0 and Iran 2-0 in earning its second-round position.

Portugal captain Luis Figo said: "We're very pleased with the victory, but we'll keep our feet on the ground, because Mexico are our next opponents and they represent a very tough challenge. But I'm generally delighted at the way it's gone within Group D."
