Carolina played without veteran Doug Weight, who missed the game with a shoulder injury.

Ward, a 22-year-old rookie goaltender, survived his second Game Seven of this year's playoffs as the Hurricanes needed seven games to get past Buffalo in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Fernando Pisani scored Edmonton's lone goal, while Jussi Markkanen made 24 saves in defeat.
