SPARTA, Ky., June 17 (UPI) -- Rookie David Gilliland won Saturday's Meijer 300 Busch Series event at the Kentucky Speedway, finishing 0.306 seconds ahead of J.J. Yeley.

The victory was the first of Gilliland's seven-race Busch Series career.

Denny Hamlin was on the pole in the 43-car field for the 200-lap race.

The race had just begun when defending champion Carl Edwards ran into car trouble.

"I was shifting into third and we broke the transmission," he said.

Points leader Kevin Harvick and Greg Biffle suffered some body damage too, and their teams went to work to keep them on the lead lap.
