HALLE, Germany, June 16 (UPI) -- After saving four match points Friday, Roger Federer finally beat Olivier Rochus in three sets in the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open at Halle, Germany.
The scores of the marathon match were 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5).
The top-seeded and world No. 1 Federer also had to overcome an uncharacteristic 57 unforced errors.
"Obviously, it could have gone either way," said a disappointed Federer, who has struggled in this tournament.
On Thursday, he beat unseeded Richard Gasquet of France, also in three sets.
"(Rochus) had the chances earlier and obviously putting me under a lot of pressure," said Federer. "I really tried to hang in there because usually three breaks in three sets should be enough to win on grass."
Other winners included No. 5 Tomas Berdych; No. 6 Tommy Haas; and non-seeds Robin Soderling and Fabrice Santoro.
