England decries amount of World Cup litter

LONDON, June 13 (UPI) -- Indignant anti-litter campaigners in England claim the World Cup is adding $2.75 million to public clean-up costs every day the tournament is on.

Alan Woods, chief executive of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, said he saw hypocrisy in the whole mess.

"Too many people -- especially younger men -- consider national pride to be solely about waving a flag," he said. "That is why they sing patriotic songs and yet at the same time ruin the reputation of the country by dumping litter and behaving badly."

While the soccer is being played in Germany, Wood said England has something to prove to the world at home.

"During this World Cup, we have a chance to prove to the planet that we are indeed a proud nation, where the environment and every human being is valued," he said.

A spokesman for the tidy campaign said most of the extra trash being left on the streets is take-out food, Sky News said.
