Trustee: Bankrupt hockey star was cheated

DETROIT, June 10 (UPI) -- A bankruptcy trustee says that hockey star Darren McCarty of the Calgary Flames was cheated of as much as $3 million by a business associate.

McCarty, who played with the Detroit Red Wings for 11 years, filed for bankruptcy last year listing $6 million in debts, the Detroit Free Press reported.

George Dakmak, the trustee responsible for liquidating McCarty's assets and paying his creditors, claimed in documents filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Detroit that John Matouk, a Michigan businessman, looted a company he owned jointly with McCarty. He said that Matouk took "an excessive and outrageous annual management fee."

McCarty had a 20 percent stake in JohnDarr LLC, a company with only one real asset, a Michigan truck stop. Matouk agreed when JohnDarr was formed to take no salary for management services but then loaned himself and another man more than $3 million.

Dakmak charges that Matouk forged McCarty's signature to a 2004 document that allowed him to take a $650,000 salary.

Matouk denies any wrongdoing and says that McCarty put no money into the company. McCarty's lawyer says that Matouk has filed a claim with the bankruptcy court that he is owed $234,288.
