Flood cancels Bank of America tourney

CONCORD, Mass., June 10 (UPI) -- The senior Bank of America Championship was canceled Saturday due to flooding on the course.

The decision not to play this weekend was made Saturday morning.

Friday's first round action was postponed due to poor course conditions and more rain led the event to be canceled. The course sits between the Sudbury and Concord rivers, both of which crested overnight, rendering the layout unplayable for at least the next few days.

"Regrettably, the decision has been made to postpone the Bank of America Championship this weekend, but under the circumstances there really was no other option," said Rick George, Champions Tour president.

"The greater Boston area has been pounded with rain the entire week and our rules personnel and Nashawtuc superintendent Paul Miller concluded there is no way to play golf."

The last time an entire tournament was washed out was in 1989. That year, Hurricane Hugo forced the cancellation of the PaineWebber Invitational in Charlotte.
