SAN FRANCSICO, Calif., June 7 (UPI) -- Jason Schmidt tied a 102-year-old franchise record with 16 strikeouts in boosting the San Francisco Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Schmidt (6-2) allowed seven hits and one walk in pitching the complete game Tuesday. His 16 strikeouts tied the Giants mark set Oct. 3, 1904, by Christy Mathewson in a New York Giants game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The only run he allowed came in the sixth on Josh Willingham's ninth home run of the season. It was the first hit of the game for the Marlins.

Florida wasted a good outing by starter Josh Johnson (4-4), who gave up five hits and two unearned runs over seven innings.

The Giants scored in the sixth thanks to poor Florida defense. Randy Winn reached on an error, took second on a ground out and scored on a Lance Niekro single. Niekro moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Moises Alou's double.
