Duke adopts code of conduct for lacrosse

DURHAM, N.C., June 5 (UPI) -- The Duke men's lacrosse team will return to the field this fall under a new code of conduct, the president of the North Carolina university announced Monday.

University President Richard Brodhead said that the lacrosse players drafted the rules. They include bans on underage drinking, disorderly conduct and harassment with penalties of counseling and community service for a first offense, a three-game suspension for the second and a season suspension for the third.

Brodhead suspended the men's lacrosse program indefinitely after allegations surfaced that members of the team raped a student from a historically black college who had been hired as an exotic dancer for a party. Three members of the team face criminal charges.

Duke Athletic Director Joe Alleva announced that Kevin Cassese, captain of Duke's 2003 lacrosse team, has been named interim coach. Cassese, hired as an assistant coach last year, will serve while a national search is conducted for a permanent coach.
