Sharapova was knocked off by No. 14 Dinara Safina, also from Russia, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.

"I had a little feeling of exhaustion in the second and third sets and (Vaidisova) was serving much better than me while I was not able to hold my serve," Mauresmo said.

"(Safina) picked up her game a little bit and mine went down, and that's not a good combination," said Sharapova, who made 63 unforced errors.

Second-seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium, 13th-seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and No. 11 Venus Williams of the United States won their matches Sunday.
