Wayne Chrebet retires from the NFL

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., June 2 (UPI) -- New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet Friday officially announced his retirement after an 11-year NFL career.

Chrebet sustained several concussions and the last one limited him to only eight games in 2005, when he was placed on injured reserve.

Doctors told him he risked possible brain damage with another one. His 2003 season also ended on injured reserve because of a concussion.

"I think the decision (to retire) was kind of made for me," Chrebet said at a news conference. "When I finally came out of the last concussion and saw my wife smiling, I realized that she knew something I didn't ... I just kind of had to accept it. I don't know if I'll ever truly accept it."

Chrebet, who was an undrafted free agent in 1995 out of Hofstra, is second in Jets' team history to Don Maynard with 580 catches for 7,365 yards and 41 touchdowns in 152 games.
