SAN DIEGO, June 2 (UPI) -- Left-handed pitcher Shawn Estes of the San Diego Padres needs surgery on his left elbow and will miss the remainder of the 2006 season.
The team said on its Web site that the 33-year-old Estes -- who signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract in the off-season -- will undergo Tommy John surgery next Wednesday by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles.
The 11-year veteran made just one start this season, and was 0-1 with an ERA of 4.50. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 6.
The team said an MRI earlier this week revealed extensive ligament and tendon damage in the elbow.
If all goes well with his rehabilitation, Estes will be able to start a throwing program in four months and might be able to pitch again in mid-July 2007.
